Upon moving to a new city for business school in 2015, Krew Social Founder Mike Chahinian found the existing tech for making new friends woefully inadequate. He realized that despite tremendous technological advancements over recent decades the process of making friends is still mostly tech-free: meeting people in person doing various shared interests, whether that be at school, church, or happy hour. Existing apps that bring large groups of strangers together or let you swipe on the faces of your future friends are wholly inadequate.
After moving again in 2021 and making many new friends the old-fashioned way in his new city he noticed there is still a need to have the right friends at the right time to do the right activities. If you have 50 friends in a text group but still can’t find anybody to work remotely or go for a run with when you want to, then it’s still inadequate. Further, he noticed the tech is mostly unchanged since his business school days.
Covid taught all of us the importance of community and in-person connection. At the same time, it displaced millions of people to new locations where they had few connections. Mike recognized that reopening from this pandemic would be the perfect opportunity to launch this app.
Krew Social will help two groups of people immensely. For one, those who are new to an area and looking for technology that will help them build the group of friends they want to have. Secondly, those who are settled in an area but are looking for friends with specific shared interests.
Mike was recently inspired by two examples from nature that reinforce the importance of community in many living things. One is the sequoia tree, which is able to grow to be the tallest trees in the world not by having deep roots but by having roots that interconnect with and are supported by the roots of their neighboring sequoia trees. The second are Belgian horses, which contrary to what you might think are able to pull far more than double when paired with a second horse of the same size. Furthermore, the amount the two can pull increases dramatically with the amount of time they’ve spent together.
Whether you’re short on time and energy, or just looking to build a new group of friends with staying power and shared interests, Krew Social provides the solution in a fun and intuitive way.
