As a Florida-based, veteran-owned business, we are thrilled to announce that the full Florida Senate officially passed its version of the state budget, which included a dedicated funding allocation for the GovChallenge Krew project.

By successfully passing Amendment 995079 on the Senate floor, lawmakers approved $350,000 to help bring Krew Social’s life-saving connection platform to Florida’s veterans.

Thank You to Our Legislative Champions and Partners

A milestone of this magnitude does not happen without visionary leadership and collaboration. We owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to Senator Darryl Rouson, who sponsored this critical amendment in the Senate. Senator Rouson’s dedication to mental health and community well-being has been instrumental in moving this initiative forward.

We also want to extend our deepest thanks to Representative Berny Jacques, our steadfast champion and the House sponsor for this project. Representative Jacques recognized early on that we need modern, proactive solutions to support our military families as they transition to civilian life, and his unwavering advocacy has been the driving force behind this effort.

Furthermore, this progress is bolstered by the backing of the Florida Department of Veterans Affairs (FDVA). Following productive discussions with their Legislative Affairs team late last year, the FDVA’s strong expression of support for the GovChallenge Krew project has been a vital validation of our shared mission to serve Florida’s veteran community. Additionally, we want to extend our sincere gratitude to Embarc Collective for their direct backing of this initiative. Having the explicit support of Tampa Bay’s premier startup hub demonstrates that our mission is not only recognized by government leaders, but is actively championed by Florida’s top technology and business innovators.

The Urgent Threat of Isolation

For many veterans, the transition out of the military is jarring because they lose the intense camaraderie—the “platoon”—that defined their service. This loss of connection is a life-threatening health crisis. According to the latest data from the Department of Veterans Affairs, over 17 veterans die by suicide every single day in the United States.

The federal VA has identified loneliness as the highest factor correlated with depression and suicidal ideation among veterans. In fact, the U.S. Surgeon General’s 2023 Advisory notes that the health effects of loneliness are equivalent to smoking 15 cigarettes per day, surpassing the risks associated with obesity or lack of physical activity.

However, the data also points to a cure: VA studies show that frequent in-person socializing can lower the odds of depression and PTSD symptoms by 50%.

Answering the Governor’s Challenge

Recognizing the urgency of this crisis, Governor Ron DeSantis signed the “Governor’s Challenge to Prevent Suicide among Service Members, Veterans, and their Families.” GovChallenge Krew was purpose-built to directly compliment and operationalize that exact mission.

GovChallenge Krew was purpose-built by veterans, for veterans, to directly operationalize that exact mission. By funding this white-labelable platform, Florida is investing in the digital infrastructure necessary to facilitate daily, real-world gatherings. It empowers veterans to easily find peers, organize healthy activities, and rebuild their squad right here at home. Furthermore, by backing this platform, Florida is stepping up to create the tech-enabled model for the rest of the country to follow.

Looking Ahead: The Push for Full Funding

While the legislature must still finalize the ultimate state budget, clearing this critical hurdle in the Senate Appropriations Committee proves that Florida’s leaders recognize the urgent need to address veteran isolation with innovative technology.

This $350,000 recommendation is a powerful foundational investment, but our work is not done. As we await the upcoming special legislative session to finalize the state budget, we will continue advocating for the legislature to fully fund the GovChallenge Krew initiative. Doing so will ensure we can maximize the reach of this platform and put this life-saving tool into the hands of as many transitioning veterans as possible.

We are energized by this momentum and immensely grateful to Senator Rouson, Representative Jacques, the FDVA, and the entire committee for believing in our mission. Together, we are building a Florida where every veteran knows they belong.
